vRay 7 Beta for 3ds Max is Out

Chaos has made the V-Ray 7 beta available. A new plugin for rendering Gaussian splatting models is among the most intriguing new features in this release. A new V-Ray Profiler for CPU rendering in 3ds Max is also included in the release, giving users the ability to assess rendering performance in greater detail. Users will find the updated Scene Converter and Bitmap Converter interfaces more user-friendly, and GeomScatter now allows exporting to Chaos Scatter. V-Ray luminaires are now supported by new lighting control options.

A number of updates have been made to Chaos Scatter, such as the addition of distribution maps and an Instance Brush that lets users paint and edit scattered objects in a scene. By removing bright, distracting artefacts, a new firefly removal algorithm has been added, improving the quality of final renders.

V-Ray 7 adds initial caustics support for GPU rendering, a long-desired feature that enables a more realistic representation of light as it reflects and refracts through transparent surfaces. Along with new features like a “separate folders” setting for render channel output and a more simplified interface that conceals superfluous engine choices and eliminates out-of-date settings, V-Ray GPU now provides better handling of bitmaps prior to their transfer to the GPU.

A new Vignette Layer and freeform region rendering are two enhancements made to the V-Ray Frame Buffer. In addition to having more control over file format options when saving images from the standalone V-Ray renderer, users can now drag and drop files straight into the VFB. Additional enhancements to the VFB include enhanced performance for large images, more accurate control over chromatic aberration effects, and fine and step sliding controls for sliders. Enhancements to the Curves layer for more precise image adjustments and better colour space handling in lookup layers are now supported by the interface.

A geometry tab and undo capabilities have been added to the V-Ray Lister, making it easier for users to monitor and undo changes. Scene management is improved with a new column for include/exclude options, and workflows have been streamlined with numerous improvements to scrolling, navigation, and usability.

Chaos Scatter has been used to optimise rendering start times, and V-Ray Fur generation has been enhanced to render hair more quickly. The GeomInstancer’s geometry compilation now uses multi-threading, and handling big bitmap files like PNG, TIFF, and OpenEXR formats now improves memory and performance. Additionally, HDR images load faster in this version.

Numerous platform and architecture updates are included in V-Ray 7. The software can now be run in basic form on Linux Arm64 systems without a graphical user interface (GUI), and the Windows builds now use vc143 by default. For better denoising performance, the Optix 7.6 denoiser API has been integrated, and support for QT minimal and offscreen platforms has been added. Additionally, installations have been moved to versioned folders, and USD support has been updated to version 0.23.11.

Additionally, improvements have been made to the lighting and proxy rendering systems. For example, a preview override cache has been used to improve VRayProxy loading times. Intensity and colour multipliers have been added for Gaussian splatting nodes, and V-Ray now supports large Gaussian splatting models. Optimisations are built into the software to render these splats more quickly. The default shadow bias for VRaySun has also been changed to better match the behaviour of other V-Ray lights, and both VRaySun and VRaySky now come with an enhanced PRG sky model.

Changes have been made to V-Ray Lights, including adding missing parameters, enabling animatable parameters for the Decay rollout in VRayLight, and listing VRayLuminaire in a different category in the V-Ray Lister. Better self-illumination and scene illumination with volumetric effects are now possible thanks to the software’s support for standalone volumetric instancing.

The scene converter in V-Ray has also been redesigned to save preferences, and some old features, like the Bitmap to VRayBitmap converter, have been eliminated where they are no longer needed.

To further improve control over scene lighting, new MaxScript functions like vrayTransferAutoExposure() enable users to transfer the most recent calculated auto-exposure value to specific cameras. Additionally, cryptomatte rendering has been enhanced with more accurate file naming conventions.
